Jason Chottiner-Penn State University

Today we're starting the introductions of our 18 ambassadors that we have hired for the 2008 school year.

Up first is:

Jason Chottiner
Penn State University

Name: Jason Chottiner

School: Penn State

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA

Zodiac sign: Capricorn

Why did you apply to JanSport?: The opportunity seemed unbelievable.

Best interview question you were asked?: If you could eat dinner with any three people, alive or dead, who would they be?
-Mario Lemieux, David Gilmour, Ramesses II (Ramesses The Great). They would pay, because they’re all loaded, and I’m poor.

What did you do when you got the job?: I peed my pants (This is what I told Jason Lucash during my interview when he asked what I would do if I got the job. Thus, it would only be fitting to answer the question this way.)

Favorite 90’s TV show?: Seinfeld

Favorite food?: Indian Cuisine

Something funny about you: I excel in spontaneous hilarity.

Favorite movie: The Naked Gun

Is Skip your homeboy?: Since January 18, 1987.

Favorite quote: “It's a topsy-turvy world, and maybe the problems of two people don't amount to a hill of beans. But this is our hill. And these are our beans!” - Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin (Naked Gun)

What do you want to be when you grow up?: A father of several children (genders do not matter, but a boy would be nice).

What are you most excited about for this position?: The opportunity to work with a co-ambassador as talented and beautiful as Aileen Farrell.

Day 17: Phoenix, Oakland, Spokane, and Pullman, Washington

4 Cities in 1 day = Exhaustion
We're sad to say this is the last night of our trip.

Somehow, we are still alive. We woke up this morning at a Scottsdale Holiday Inn and drove to Tempe to hit the ASU campus. Our rental car check-in guy at National last night enrolled Laurie in the Emerald Club, which gave us our car of choice: an awesome red Tacoma pickup truck. Something Laurie would never be caught dead driving, but we figured it'd be blog worthy, for sure.

We spent the day at ASU interviewing more students. We were impressed to find that a few were dedicated blog readers; we even had one show up with a 4-pack of Red Bull.

Lunch at ASU was actually not bad. We decided to eat in the cafeteria (which brought us both back to the brief time we spent in school at ASU). Jason ate a salad and some chinese food and Laurie had a huge salad. Of course, we split a brownie cake dessert. We left campus and jumped in the Tacoma for the airport, when we realized we forgot to get gas... so we stopped and filled up 2 gallons and did a mini gas station photo shoot (minus the firetruck).

A beautiful thing happened at the airport: Einstein Bros. bagels. Laurie was FINALLY able to eat something vegetarian BESIDES a burrito, and Jason got a turkey bagel sandwich. Both healthy. For the first time. Ever. We wish all airports would have Einstein bagels. Life would be so much better.

We flew Southwest from Phoenix to Oakland, where we got off the plane and fantasized about running out to our cars and going home... but we kept on trekking, and eating, per usual. We had our second dinner of the night, Laurie got a veggie burrito, and Jason got a CPK pizza. We boarded the plane and headed for fabulous Spokane, Washington and arrived around 9pm.

Once again, we headed over to National car rental where we found out being an Emerald Club member has its perks: free upgrades. We chose a gray Toyota 4runner and drove down the scary pitch black one-way road to Pullman, WA, which took 2 hours. Those 2 hours were spent exchanging quality stories, during which Laurie also realized that Pullman is in the middle of nowhere. Jason gave her the quick tour of Pullman: the happenin' Dennys, the scary hotel (that also smelled awful) he stayed in with Skip (JanSport's founder) last year along with some restaurants and such.

We arrived around 11:20pm at another Holiday Inn, and were greeted by free homemade chocolate chip cookies, which we of course indulged in. Jason got a room with a jacuzzi, and Laurie got a double that smelled like a hamster cage. This is a common theme.

Stats of the day:

Miles traveled: 1302
Students interviewed: 12
Nights spent at hotels: 13 (9 of them at Holiday Inns)
Times Jason swore off the pizza bag airline: 3
Times Jason said he was happy to fly Southwest:12
Best meal of the day: Einstein Bros bagels
Best part of the evening: knowing it's our last night of this trip
Worst part of the evening: knowing it's our last night of this trip
Something strange: Laurie won't drink tap water.
Random thought of the day: Why is Vassa water only sold in airports? You never seem to see it in any stores ever.

Somehow, we've managed not to kill each other. Tomorrow's our last day. Wish us luck!

Night.

Days 15 and 16: College Station, TX and the travel associated with it....

"Don't Mess with Texas" and "Don't mess with Jason and Laurie when it comes to airport food".

This is going to be a big update:

We traveled all day yesterday (Monday) out to Houston to make the journey to Texas A&M. We got into Houston after flying on a new airline, which served pizza to passengers in hot plastic bags, very enticing. Apparently this airline cut down on passenger leg room to use the money to buy hot pizza in plastic bags... great business model.

We decided to stop at Pappacito's in Houston for some tex mex food, here are some pictures from the dinner experience:

Jason and Bernie (Waiter) holding it down

Look at the amount of food consumed between the two of us.
Oh and Monday's rental car was the Mazda 6

We left the restaurant and made the 2 hour drive to College Station, TX to stay in another Holiday Inn Express. But yes the day would not be complete without another amazing vending machine and an accompanying video:

**************************

Tuesday:

We woke up super early and drove over to Texas A&M to interview 16 students. Checked out the football stadium, the MSC, and the rest of Aggie-land Had some interesting interviews and met some great people, we then headed over to the airport to catch our flight back to Houston. The flight to Houston was on yet another amazing prop plane, this time we headed straight into a storm over Houston and we both thought:

A. Everyone on the plane would vomit

B. The plane would flip over

C. The plane would crash

D. All of the above would take place

We did land safely in Houston, and had a 3 hour layover with the goals of finding the best food in the airport which became quite the task. After consulting with a golf cart driver, 2 hostesses, and a shuttle bus supervisor, we found that Pappado's had the best seafood in the Houston airport....so of course we had to try it (see meals below). After eating we caught our next plane (pizza bag air again) to Phoenix and checked into another Holiday Inn Express. We have a full day of interviewing at Arizona State tomorrow before flying up to Pullman, WA for our last stop of the month at Washington State University. Of course our day tomorrow wouldn't be complete without a layover in Oakland airport....oh how tempting it will be to just walk out the front door to our cars.

We'll touch base from Cougar country manana.

**********************

Stats of the last 2 days:

Miles traveled: 2,409
Students interviewed: 16
Nights spent at hotels: 12 (8 of them in 8 different holiday inns)
Times Jason swore off the pizza bag airline: 7
Number of people that ordered a whole Maine Lobster at Papado's: One brave soul
Best Meal of the last 2 days: Pappado's. Laurie had a salad, Jason had a pita:

Worst meal of the last 2 days: All the food we ate in the Texas A&M, MSC basement (This included a sandwich, chick-fil-a fries, 2 sodas, and a pickle)

Best quote of the day: "Ooooooooh Jessie James, a real texas outlaw...HOLLA"- One of the interviewees talking about who she'd have dinner with.

Most bizarre thing to happen: We went to fill up the rental car in College Station before dropping it off at the airport. We pulled into a Shell and went to the pump and started filling up the car. The gas was coming out so slow it took about 3 minutes for 1 gallon to be pumped. We let the car fill up while we went inside to browse the junk food. Upon walking outside, our Mazda 6 was sitting in a pool of gasoline that was accumulating because the clicker on the pump wouldn't shut off. Our car had been overflowing with gasoline for a solid 2-3 minutes and it was soaked. Long story short, the fire department had to come out and spray a foam substance on the ground to prevent the whole gas station from blowing up, and Laurie freaked out that we were going to die. Obviously, she overreacted. Check out the sweet picture from the station:

Days 12,13,and 14: Wisconsin and Cali

Here's a quick recap of what happened the last 3 days.

Day 12 (Friday): We woke up after finally sleeping in for once 10:00AM!!! We hopped in the car and drove over to the JanSport store in Appleton, WI. Checked out the store, which looked amazing, then headed over to the JanSport office to say hi to some co-workers.

Here's Laurie favorite rental car (The Pontiac Vibe) outside the JanSport store:

For lunch went over to Jonathan's Italian Bistro, and had an amazing lunch. Met Jack who was our waiter....big shout out to Jack he's the man.

Hopped on the plane at 3:00 from Appleton's airport (this is where Laurie pretty much got strip searched for a bottle of nailpolish that was hidden inside a shoe, inside a bag, inside a garmet bag, inside her suitcase. Flew through Minneapolis and had to walk from gate A12 fo F16 due to a broken tram, which was quite the workout and then got on the plane to SFO and landed about 8:00PM.

Day 13 and 14 (Saturday & Sunday): On Saturday Jason went back to Danville to see his dog Brody, and his parents, and laid in the sun, ate mexican food and Dessert (Coldstone), and just relaxed.

Laurie watched basketball with Eric and hung around the house and did 8 loads of laundry.

On sunday, jason went to the northface store checked out some sleeping bags, helped Makai unpack her house, had an omlette, then grilled out for his roomates and friends at his house.

Laurie went to the movies, and got some work done.

All in all it was a relaxing weekend before the last week of the recruiting trip (WEST COAST!!)

Day 11: Leaving Madison, entering Appleton...

1:18am. Do you know where your JanSport Student Ambassador Searchers are?

Most likely suffering from insomnia.

We had a very, very long day today. We departed the (smelly) Holiday Inn in Madison and headed over to the University for a LONG day of interviews at 7:30am. We interviewed around 30 students back-to-back with a quick escape to Chipotle where we both inhaled burritos (without tasting them) and ran back to campus. Overall, the students were great and we had a fun time interviewing them, although, we became slightly delirious towards the end. Madison is an amazing town, with a beautiful campus. We only wish we could have spent a bit more time there (at least outside the career center).

In the new Pontiac Vibe (a welcome change to the Toyota Corolla with horrible alignment), we scooted off to Appleton after a shaky battle with the GPS navigator and spotty cell phone reception. Laurie was on the phone for most of the ride trying to catch up on work and respond to her 14 voice mails, while Jason tried to silently recuperate (he was coughing up blood this morning).

We finally arrived in Appleton, and checked into yet another Holiday Inn (thankfully, a nicer one this time) and then met Lindsay, our Appleton cohort, for dinner. We caught her up on all the "off-the-blog" updates of our trip. We know, you're jealous... you want to hear some of the behind-the-scenes stories, but they'll just have to wait until you see us next.

Tomorrow, we'll hit the JanSport factory store in Appleton, make a quick stop at the office and then head back to SF for a whopping two days. Perhaps Laurie can lighten up her 40-pound suitcase full of laundry. It's long overdue and has caused several black and blues. And maybe, just maybe, sleep will occur.

Next week: Texas A&M, ASU and Washington State.

Stay tuned.

We're going to try to refrain from desserts this weekend.

Day 10: Columbia, Madison, and Where's Diba?

Enjoy!

Best meal of the day: Peanut butter pie from Angelicks in Madison.

Worst meal of the day: Nuts at Kansas City Airport

Weirdest thing to happen: being inside a 1-room airport smaller than Jason's living room after Laurie was searched because there was a tube of mascara in her bag.

Quote of the day: "My name is Diba." Laurie: "Diva, really?? That's cool!" No, Diba, with a B!"

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Day 9: Travel to Columbia, MO

Welcome to Missouri....the "Show me state."
Today's Rental Car: Toyota Corolla (with the worst alignment imaginable)

We left Louisville around 12:00 today and flew into Kansas City (by way of St. Louis). Check out the great picture of the St. Louis skyline that Jason took from the plane today:

Upon landing at the Kansas City airport, we got our rental car (and watched an awesome fight at the rental car counter because Hertz was out of Cadillacs), then headed straight to get some real Kansas City bbq from a place called "The Smokehouse" (see meals below). Jason fell in love with this place and even had to ride the pig on the way out:

We left the smokehouse and made the 2 hour trek through the nothingness of I-70 all the way into Columbia, which is home to University of Missouri. Upon arriving we were hungry again but did some work for a couple hours. Deliriousness and hunger led to the following amazing video detailing the state we were in:

Laurie keeps the tradition alive of never showing her full face in any pictures/video related to the blog. We finally found our way out of the Holiday Inn and across the street to another fine American chain establishment that we hadn't eaten at yet: Applebees. We scarfed down our meals and then headed back to the hotel to make some resume copies before a full day of interviewing at Mizzou tomorrow and travel to Madison, WI.

We'll check in tomorrow night from Badger country.

Stats of the day:

Miles traveled: 694
Students interviewed: 0
Nights spent at hotels: 9 (5 of them at Holiday Inns)
Number of buckeyes consumed by Laurie: 1
Number of times Laurie mentioned she missed the Kia Rondo today: 6
Best Meal of the day: Ribs from the Smokehouse in Kansas City (fries, ribs, Texas toast, pickles):

Worst meal of the day: Pasta from Applebees

Best quote of the day: "Are you guys looking at going to school at Mizzou?"- guy in back of us in line at Hertz in Kansas City, thinking we were still students.

Most random thing we saw:

In the holiday inn parking lot they have reserved signs strictly for women.

******************************************************

Tomorrow's plan:

Interview at Mizzou 9:00AM to 3:00PM

Flight leaves Columbia: 5:00PM

Flight arrives Kansas City: 5:50PM

Flight departs Kansas City: 6:55

Flight Arrives Madison, WI: 8:15PM EST

Day 8: University of Kentucky

Getting Lucky in Kentucky.....more like Getting Fat in Kentucky.

Today was the day when we realized we're gluttons. Somehow on this trip all we seem to do is: eat buckeyes, jelly belly berries, french fries, food full of cheese and creams, drink soda, and order dessert every possible time.

We woke up after another restless night of sleep and drove over to the Stuckert Career Center at University of Kentucky. We interviewed 19 students today and met some interesting people with some pretty good stories and hobbies. Ate lunch at Qdoba where we scarfed down our burritos and then headed back to the career center for the afternoon's worth of interviewing.

After interviewing over to Bellini's for dinner (see meals below), based on a great reccomendation from one of the students. We experienced the most amazing meal we've have had on the entire trip. We each threw down a loaf of bread, a plate of bruschetta, a salad, a plate full of pasta, and then dessert. By far best meal we've had to date. We probably gained 10 pounds from it alone.

Tomorrow it's time for one more interview, then we're off to the great state of Missouri for some interviewing at University of Missouri on Wednesday.

We'll touch base tomorrow night after a full day of travel. Hopefully, we won't eat as much... our stomachs can't handle it.

Stats of the day:

Miles Traveled: 10
Students Interviewed: 19
Nights spent in hotels: 8
Number of non-home cooked meals consumed: 17
Number of estimated calories consumed today between Laurie and Jason today: 7,800

Best meal of the day (and the trip): Bellini's

Worst meal of the day: None, but if we had to pick......the granola bar from the career center.

Quote of the day.... it's a tie from two of the students we met with today:

"I went on a date to Bellini's once, we got the bill and the guy I was with took out his credit card to pay, I was like....WABAM!"-One of our students, expressing how nice of a place Bellini's is (we agree - thanks for the suggestion!).

"I applied to Big Ass Fans for an internship" The last student of the day, revealing his summer plans.

Strangest thing we saw: the following sign hanging in a sandwich shop in Lexington:

We don't get it, really. But we couldn't stop laughing...

**************************
Game plan for tomorrow:

Interview at 8:30 AM
Drive from Lexington to Louisville: 9:30AM
Flight from Louisville to Kansas City: 12:05
Arrive in Kansas City: 1:30
Drive from Kansas City to Columbia, MO: 2:00
Arrive in Columbia, MO: 4:00PM
All day: Digest food from Bellini's.

Day 6 and 7: Louisville, KY and Lexington, KY

Kentucky's state motto is: "United we stand, divided we fall."

Laurie and I feel it should be: "Kentucky: We'll give you a case of insomnia."

We spent the weekend in Lousville, KY at the 21C museum hotel and went to bed both nights at around 5:00AM. This caused us to sleep until about 3:00PM on Saturday, just in time to wake up for Thunder over Louisville, which is a huge air show/fireworks/carnival thing.

We ate lunch at Bristol and then met up with JK to go down to Thunder. We walked around and finally got down by the waterfront which was pretty nice, except for the 500,000 Kentuckians going crazy for this carnival thing with every type of fried food imaginable. This picture should give you an idea:

Don't worry, we avoided the Belly Busters.

The weather changed on us and it was maybe 40 degrees, windy, and raining (yes we heard about the 80 degree weather the bay area had this weekend, there is no need to bring it up in any more phone conversations you have with us). We then went and had a couple drinks at Proof and headed over to the fireworks display that they were having:

We ate some awesome Mexican food at Los Aztecas (see meals) and called it a night.
******
Today (Sunday) we woke up at 12:00PM and headed over to Bristol for a real Kentucky brunch. This was awesome, but also put us in a food comatose for the remainder of the afternoon:

Awesome biscuits, fried chicken, eggs, pasta salad, desserts, fruits, etc.

We then hopped in the car and made a stop so Jason could pay homage to the "Jim Morrison" of Kentucky....Colonel Sanders:

We then took off to Lexington after making a quick stop in Fischerville, KY. Drove a while on I-64 and saw horse farm after horse farm. Laurie decided to finish off the bag of Jelly Belly berries while listening to some "Beck" on the iPod. We rolled into Lexington around 6:30 and checked into the Crowne Plaza-Lexington Campbell House then went out to dinner at PF Changs. We were getting sick of American food chains so opted for the Asian food chain this time.

Starting up the second week of recruiting at University of Kentucky tomorrow, so we'll check in after the visit to Wildcat Country.

Enjoy all your home cooked meals... because we certainly can't.

Stats of the weekend:

Miles traveled: 60
Students interviewed: 1
Nights spent in hotels: 7
Number of non-home cooked meals consumed to date: 15
Best meal of the weekend: Mexican Food from Los Aztecas

Worst meal of the weekend: Dessert shooters from PF Changs

Best quote of the weekend: When walking through the carnival, we came across a lady who had a sweet mullet, accompanied by her son who was holding a plastic unicorn. She walked passed the fried food section, grabbed his arm and said:

"Boy if you keep actin like this, I'm gonna sick this here unicorn on ya."

Best thing we saw: Besides all the amazing people at the carnival, we were welcomed to Lexington by Darryl Isaacs (you can't miss him):

Priceless moments on the road...

Laurie here with some pics that haven't been posted.

1. Jason dropping his glass at lunch this afternoon... shattering everywhere:

2. Laurie's towel rack falling off the wall in Morgantown, WV at a Holiday Inn on Thursday morning:

3. The best truck ever... driving thru Virginia:

4. Jason trying to clean a stain off his shirt at Red Robin:

Day 5: Driving through West Virginia and Kentucky

So today was the day it finally happened.........we found a cracker barrel.

We started the day off in Morgantown, WV (home to West Virginia University) at about 1:00 in hopes of making it to Louisville 7 hours later. We took off and came across the cracker barrel sign about 10 minutes south of Morgantown and just had to stop. We go in and order our food and they finally bring out the biscuits that we had been craving for 6 days. They tasted better than anything that had hit our pallets the whole week.

We inhaled the plate of biscuits then the meal came out (see meals below), absolutely delicious. After the meal we went through and decided to go on a candy shopping spree, we bought some mallow pies, chocolate covered pretzels, buckeyes, and jelly belly berries.

Laurie picked up a craving for the buckeyes along the drive:

We took back off on the road and drove through the remaining nothingness of West Virginia. We stopped off the beautiful town of huntington to see Marshall University and pick up a iPod transmitter because we were sick of listening to country music the whole way.

We made it through the rest of the state, hit some bad weather, but finally made it to Kentucky and into Louisville. We got a great recomendation on a hotel and are staying at the 21C Museum Hotel on the waterfront in Louisville (http://www.21cmuseumhotel.com/). It's a crazy hotel and one of the coolest that either of us have stayed at. Check out the scene in the men's bathroom (mirror) and what's outside Jason's room:

We met up with a good friend of JanSport, JK McKnight. JK is the captain of the Forecastle Festival (http://www.forecastlefest.com/) and a local to Louisville. JK met up with us at Proof, which is a restaurant downstairs in the hotel for a couple drinks and then took us out on a quick tour of Louisville and onto a place called the Pink Door which was a lot of fun. All in all it was a great day and a good start to a relaxing weekend in Kentucky. We'll check in tomorrow after "Thunder over Louisville", which is the largest fireworks display in this part of the country and it also includes an air show.

Stats of the day:

Miles traveled: 403

Students Interviewed: 0

Nights slept in Holiday Inns: 4

Meal of the day: Cracker Barrel (no-brainer)

Worst meal of the day: Mallow cups we picked up from Cracker Barrel.

Best quote of the day: "If you guys are gonna eat that many biscuits I can bring you a box of them to go."- Waiter at the Cracker Barrel

Strangest thing we saw: Upon driving into Louisville we came across this in a truck next to us on I-64:

(yes that is a dog, with his own doghouse in the back of a pickup truck, and he is smiling).

Highlight of the day: We encountered quite possibly the best vending machine at the hotel in west virginia, see video below:

Also a big shout-out to all our loyal fans who have contacted us over the last couple of days and said how much they love reading this blog everyday: Makai, Chris Miller, Staci, Steinberg, Lee, Soderstrom, Ellison, Curtis, Mom and Dad, Lindsay, Cindy, Gary Van D., and anyone else we forgot who's been in contact with us.

PS: Happy Birthday to Carrie Steinberg and Cindy Kraeber!!

Day 4: Penn State and West Virginia

It's 1:30 a.m. and Jason is sleeping. Laurie is up trying to catch up on all of the work she's missed while at Penn State today. Sadly, we don't have any pictures to post, but that will be fixed at some point tomorrow.

Today was definitely the day we became delirious.

Highlights:
One of our interviewees arrived this morning with a Sticky Bun wrapped in a Penn State ribbon. She said she's been following our blog and thought we'd need something to eat this morning. She was right. That was priceless.

Jason ordered the strangest concoction for dinner tonight at Ruby Tuesdays. He got a salad from the salad bar (with croutons that looked like miniature brownies), a side of fries, and a custom dish he asked them to call the Jason Special: pasta, broccoli, chicken, tomato, and marinara. He ate it all, mostly. Quite impressive. Laurie had the most disgusting veggie burger ever cooked with a side of fries, rather, a side of salt with potatoes.

Right now, we are in West Virginia (yes, at another glorious Holiday Inn). Tomorrow we'll finish the drive to Kentucky.

We've met with 75+ students over the last three days. Sleep is needed. Badly.

More to come soon... the Kia Rondo is still going strong, complete with a fancy new insect cemetery decorating the windshield.

Night!

Stats of the day:
Miles traveled: 180
Students interviewed: 27
Nights spent in holiday inns: 4
Meal of the day: Sticky Bunn from one of our interviewees at PSU

Worst meal of the day: Sandwich from PSU business center, however the carrots and pickles that came as sides were quite nice. Instead of a picture of the sandwich here's a pic of the business building which resembles an airline terminal.

Best quote of the day: "Does JanSport make backpacks?"- Laurie in a state of fatigue.

Best thing we saw: After driving 2 hours through the boondocks of Pennsyvania and Maryland, we come across a small town called Cumberland with a beautiful chruches and brick buildings. It was a nice break from the nothingness of this part of the country.

*********************

Tomorrow's Game plan:

Drive more than 350 miles through West Virignia and Kentucky...on way into Louisville. Well also we need to find a cracker barrel, the biscuit craving is at an all time high.

Until next time.....enjoy reading and think about us staring at trees, trailers, and the wholesomeness of America,
